Independence Day, Celebrated by Everyone
Flag hoisting, performances, and a day built around what each child can do
National celebrations are one of the clearest places where exclusion shows up without anyone intending it. A school assembly, a flag ceremony, a cultural programme: none of it is designed to keep children with disabilities out, and almost all of it does.
SMART Foundation runs an annual Independence Day celebration in Kancheepuram built the other way round. Flag hoisting, cultural performances, and distribution of sweets and gifts, with the programme assembled around what the children can actually perform rather than a fixed running order they have to fit into.
Every participant performs. That is the only rule the programme is built on.
